Trip Lee has a song where the chorus exclaims, “I ain’t got no worries! I ain’t worried bout a thing!”
Worry happens when we build our life around what is temporal instead of what is eternal. If it can break, if it can run away, if it can be stolen, if it can lose value, if it can be torn to shreds, if it can crash, if it can warp or rust….
Isn’t it funny how easily people put their trust in things instead of the One who gave us those things to begin with. God wants and desires that our faith and trust be in Him and Him alone.
Why put your trust in a car? You will always have to buy another one. Why trust computers? They crash and have to be upgraded constantly. Why put your trust in a TV or a phone? They have to be upgraded or traded in every few years. Why put your trust in a house? You are constantly having to work, fix something with a house. Why put your trust in a person? People are not perfect.
Jesus said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:20-23 ESV
God gave us all things for our enjoyment and for His glory. We are a steward over what He has given to us. Here is the kicker. What if God told you to give something away? What if God told you to sell something? Could you part with that item?
I once read a quote that was aimed at rich people. It said something like this…The more stuff you have, the more you will worry about your stuff. Quite true. The more things one has, the more they begin to worry about whether or not their house might catch fire and burn down. They worry about thieves robbing them while they are on vacation even when they have an alarm system.
The bottom line is this. Don’t worry about what you cannot control. God wants our faith and trust in Him. God will take care of the stuff. Why? Because it is His stuff anyway. Our job is just to trust God and be a responsible steward over what He has given us.
God will take care of our houses, families, jobs, cars, things………
We are to be responsible caretakers of those things….especially for His glory.
